The current CX-9 is the oldest Mazda in production being released back in 2006. It uses an already ancient platform with an old Ford engine, meaning it is not as fuel efficient or as fun as we would like. There are some good news though. Not too long ago Mazda announced that they are going to launch the 2016 Mazda CX-9 at the L.A. Motor Show and despite what the early rumors said, it seems that this is actually going to be an all new car rather than another facelift of an old model. It will be using Mazda’s modular platform which will employ the SkyActiv technologies which means it will be made mostly out of high strength steel, composites and aluminum which will give it great structural rigidity as well as a really low weight, especially when compared with the older model.
2016 Mazda CX-9 Exterior
Let’s start with the design of the upcoming 2016 Mazda CX-9. Even though there is not that much official information about it, we are positive that the car will employ the same SkyActiv design as all the current cars in Mazda’s roster. It is safe to assume that the CX-9, despite the fact it is a more serious car than the average Mazda product, will be a bigger version of the great CX-3 with a very similar front end but a slightly buffed up design. The car might receive a floating-roof effect which would make it a bit more fun to look at but these details could always change until it will be officially unveiled.
Interior of new CX-9
The interior will also go through a major redesign so the new CX-9 will offer the newest equipment and technologies Mazda currently has. Early rumors actually said that the car will be very similar to the Mazda 6 sedan with a similar dashboard but with an extra row of seats which would make it a very good deal for families. Things such as triple-zone automatic climate control, electric front seats or even an infotainment system with a TFT touch screen are going to be standard features, making it better value for money than some of its competitors.
Mazda CX-9 Engine
Engine wise, the 2016 Mazda CX-9 will make use of all new SkyActiv engines which are finally going to replace the aging 3.7 liter Ford V6. The base model is expected to come as standard with an all new 2.5 liter turbocharged inline 4 which it will share with the Mazda 3 MDS. However, in this particular application, the engine will likely be rated at 300 horsepower and more than 300 lb-ft of torque which is a good improvement over the old 3.7 liter engine. The best part about this swap is that the new model will actually use quite a bit less fuel, all while offering a better driving experience due to the extra torque and power. It is likely that all wheel drive is going to be standard while the car will be only offered with a 6 speed automatic gearbox.
A diesel offering has also been rumored for quite some time but unfortunately Mazda currently has some problems with the emissions of their diesel engines and the CX-9 will very likely receive a 2.2 liter diesel only after all these problems will be solved.
Release date and Price of new 2016 Mazda CX-9
However, the car will not be released in showrooms for at least a few more months after the initial release and it should come for a base price of around $30,000 which is right where the current model sits. The new platform should also mean that the car will be just as fun to drive as all the current Mazda models and it should be fuel efficient as well as powerful to be able to compete with the cars in its class.
