The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu finally made its public debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show and it comes larger, sportier and more elegant.Since the Malibu has very strong competitors, it was time for GM to overhaul its midsize sedan and turn it into a more upscale model.
2016 Chevrolet Malibu Exterior Design
The new 2016 Chevrolet Malibu is sleeker, more elegant, sportier, and also longer than its predecessor. It is 2.3 inches longer and the wheelbase has been stretched by 3.6 inches.
This model has some cues which are inspired by the larger Chevrolet Impala. It is evident on the new headlamps, the front apron, the taillights and the beltline creases. The more upscale appearance also has a few unique features as well, like the split front grille that’s wider below the bow-tie emblem. Around back, there are new, slimmer taillight clusters, a sportier bumper and pointy trunk lid.
Interior design of 2016 Malibu
The interior of the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu is not just comfortable, but it also has, comparing with the previous model, more space for the rear legroom, thanks to the extra 3.6 inches in the wheelbase.
The new center stack has less buttons and knobs, and the various commands are accessible via seven-inch color touchscreen, which comes as standard on lower trims. An eight-inch screen comes as standard on higher equipped models and as an optional on the less expensive ones. The three-spoke steering wheel has a new button layout.
The interior has satin chrome accents and they make it more upscale. New perforated leather seating surfaces come as standard on the Premier model and an optional for the Hybrid and LT trims.
Drive-train of new 2016 Chevrolet Malibu
The 2016 Malibu is coming with a new entry-level engine, a 1.5-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder with capacity to deliver 160 hp and 184 pound-feet of torque. This engine replaced the previous 2.5-liter engine rated at 197 hp and 191 pound-feet of torque. The new power-plant is less powerful, but it has better fuel efficiency with 27 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. The new engine mates with a six-speed automatic transmission.
The 2.0-liter turbo-four continues with less power, but slightly better fuel economy. This unit will mate to an eight-speed automatic, which is really good news. It comes with 250 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque. The previous Malibu turbo was rated at 21 mpg/city and 30 mpg/highway. This one comes with fuel efficiency increased to 22 mpg/city and 32 mpg/highway.
The biggest news in this department is that the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu comes with a hybrid drivetrain after five years. There will be a pair of modified electric motors, a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and a 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The company estimates a segment-leading fuel economy of 47 mpg combined, with a total system output at 182 ponies.
