The 2015 Volvo XC90 R-Design represents a huge shift for the brand with an all-new platform underneath and the latest Drive-E engine family for power. The R-Design trim was showcased during the recent Detroit auto show with its sporty look and modifications to its body. One of the most fantastic things about the car is that it has a fuel economy that can rival compact cars, and in some road tests, it has managed to deliver an amazing 30 miles per gallon.
Horizontal slots have now replaced the front grille and an additional middle intake on its air dam makes the car look more aggressive. The side mirrors now feature matte silver, and the rear exhaust outlets now huddle in a low apron. All these modifications have resulted in a more attractive design thanks to the muscular look of the vehicle. The car is four inches longer and so you can expect more trunk space. It rides on 20-inch wheels.
The interior features a dash of leather to give the car a luxurious look. The tread plates are illuminated and the pedals, gearshift and floor mats also feature the R-Design trim. The infotainment system also features this unique look, and the centerpiece is a new tablet-like 9-inch touchscreen, which replaces a multitude of buttons and dials with a clean, clutter-free dashboard. Automatic climate control, forward-collision alert and lane-departure warning are there to assist the driver. Rear park assist is also part of the standard equipment and there is enough room in the cabin for seven passengers.
Under the hood, the 2015 Volvo XC90 R-Design will boast of an efficient petrol or diesel engine. The engine can be a 2-liter petrol engine capable of producing 316 bi-horsepower or a 2-liter diesel engine capable of producing 222 bi-horsepower. The petrol engine will be both turbo and supercharged while the diesel engine is twin-turbocharged. Both engines will be paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. A 360 bi-horsepower plug-in hybrid power train is also available, which will combine the 2-liter petrol engine with an electric powered motor. In April 2015, an all-wheel drive XC90 is going to be available.
When it comes to performance, the 2015 Volvo XC90 R-Design can go from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds while its top speed is 130 mph. You can expect the vehicle to give you an average of 17 miles per gallon.
